Drug Description

Nolvadex is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) medication. The active ingredient in Nolvadex is tamoxifen. This medication is supplied in a liquid form or in oral tablets of 10mg and 20mg.

What are the uses of Nolvadex?

This drug is used to treat women with metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has extended to other organs of the body). It is also administered to people with breast cancer who have had radiation therapy or people with breast cancer who have had surgery. Nolvadex can also be used to prevent breast cancer, especially in women that may be at a high risk of getting breast cancer.

What is the dosage of Nolvadex?

Nolvadex must always be used as stated in your doctor's prescription. The oral tablets do not have to be taken with food. The duration of treatment is usually five years, but your doctor will decide the period of treatment.

Any dose that exceeds 20mg should be divided into two doses. One dose should be taken every morning with another equal dose taken every evening. Take each dose at the same time of the day or night.

Use a proper medical measuring utensil if you are using liquid Nolvadex so that you are sure to dispense the correct amount.

What about a missed dose?

If you miss a dose, just ignore it and revert to your normal schedule.

Important information about Nolvadex

When you first start your treatment with Nolvadex you might have increased pain. Do not get too alarmed because this can indicate that Nolvadex is having a positive effect on your condition. But if the pain persists, you must contact your doctor.

Pregnant women must not handle Nolvadex tablets, especially if they are broken. The tablet dust can be absorbed through the skin and the nose. This could contaminate the unborn baby.

Nolvadex will be unsafe for you if you are allergic to tamoxifen. Inform your doctor about any other substance that you may be allergic to.

If you have been prescribed Nolvadex to treat cancer of your milk ducts, or to prevent breast cancer, it is important that you tell your doctor if you are using any blood-thinning medication, if you have had a stroke, or a blood clotting disorder. In such cases, your doctor may decide that Nolvadex is not suitable.

Also tell you doctor if you are a smoker, or if you suffer with any of the following: cataracts, diabetes, liver disease, high blood pressure, or if you find it difficult to walk.

Do not take Nolvadex if you are pregnant – it may harm your unborn baby. Because it has not been established if tamoxifen passes into breast milk, do not breastfeed unless you have spoken to your doctor.

During treatment with Nolvadex, men and women are advised to use a non-hormonal method of birth control. Ask your doctor about your options.

Side effects of Nolvadex

Nolvadex is not likely to cause any severe side effects. Common ones include mild vomiting or nausea, and hot flashes. But if any unusual pain or discomfort occurs, check with your doctor.

Overdose

An excessive dose of Nolvadex can be dangerous, as with all medications. Symptoms could include dizziness, tremors, or unsteadiness. Call for emergency help.
